The Cool Way Star Wars: The Last Jedi Used CGI In The Throne Room Fight
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available via Digital purchase and soon arrives on Blu-ray, which means fans have access to all sorts of deleted scenes and special features. As the physical release date rolls closer, the Star Wars marketing is once again in full force and now behind-the-scenes details about how the movie was made are starting to surface. Star Wars movies obviously use a ton of CGI but special effects supervisor Chris Corbould recently revealed that the film used digital effects in ways you might not have expected. Here's what he said:
I think the fight in Snoke's throne room is possibly one of those. We did a lot of fire effects, pieces of material, flames of material dropping around Rey as the whole fight was going, but in actual fact the whole background flames -- you know, all the background alight was all CG. So, I'd like to take the credit for that, but that was them.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi has its ups and downs, but one moment that shoots through the ceiling is the fight scene where Rey and Kylo Ren join forces against the Elite Praetorian Guards. It's an excellent scene and a really exciting fight as the two Force users fight for their lives while a fire slowly consumes the background. Ashes and bits of material blow through the air during the whole fight, Snoke's regime literally burning down. Obviously, lightsabers are CG but it turns out that wasn't all.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Chris Corbould chatted about the fight scene and revealed exactly how much of it was CG. While the actors went through the impressive choreography, the room wasn't actually burning down around them. The ashes, fires, and the light from said fires all came from the special effects team. Obviously, for safety reasons, production couldn't set a fire in the middle of a film set, so it's not shocking that all of it was CG, but it just speaks to how good everything looks that it's not immediately noticeable. Afterall, the only CG an audience usually notices is bad CG.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits store shelves on March 27, 2018. The Blu-ray comes with 14 deleted scenes and plenty of behind-the-scenes featurettes revealing all sorts of details about how one of the most anticipated movies of 2017 was made. The home release also comes with a special commentary from director Rian Johnson about all the choices he made in the blockbuster sequel.
