One Star Wars: The Force Awakens Plot Simon Pegg Pitched To J.J. Abrams

Many people know that Simon Pegg plays a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, it turns out Pegg's influence on the movie went far beyond that, as he actually suggested a scene be included in the movie. During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Pegg revealed that he suggested to director J.J. Abrams that his character of Unkar Plutt should return after the Millennium Falcon left Jakku. While the scene didn't make it into the final film, Pegg doesn't really care. According to the actor...

And I shot my scenes on Jakku, which is a sort of desert planet. And then I emailed J.J. Abrams and said, 'Look, the Millennium Falcon, in the original Star Wars, the Empire put a homing beacon on the Falcon and traced it to Yavin IV, the rebel base at the end. What if the homing beacon was still on board and Unkar activated it and used it to track Rey to the Maz's palace? And then he could catch up with her there and have another scene?' And J.J. was like, 'Yeah, OK!' So, we shot this scene where Unkar catches up to Rey and he's gonna shoot her and Chewbacca pulls his arm off and like throws it across the room. It wasn't in the film at the end because J.J. realized it was pointless, but I was like, 'I don't care. It happened!'

It seems that Simon Pegg was having so much fun being in a Star Wars movie that he went looking for a reason to justify being in it more. He explains to Stephen Colbert that he explained Unkar's return by arguing that the Imperial homing beacon from the original film might still be on the Millennium Falcon. I'm not sure I buy that argument. In that film, Leia is already convinced they're being tracked and when the Death Star shows up on the doorstep one would think Han would go looking for tracking devices. Still, there's every reason to believe Unkar Plutt would put his own beacon on board the Millennium Falcon just in case it went missing.

While Simon Pegg's extra scene didn't make it in the final version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the scene was shot. If you check out the deleted scenes on the movie's Blu-ray edition, you can see it. We knew the scene had existed, though the fact that Pegg was the one behind it is an interesting new wrinkle. What's The Best Die Hard Sequel?

It would be very hard for me to count how many times we have argued over the Die Hard franchise in the CinemaBlend offices. There are watercooler topics -- conversations that we regurgitate every other year -- and then there is the raging Die Hard debate. It goes like this: Some in the office feel that the best sequel in the Die Hard franchise is the third movie, John McTiernan's Die Hard with a Vengeance. It has even been suggested that With A Vengeance might be better than the original Die Hard, to claim the title of "Supreme Die Hard Movie."

This is blasphemy.

But we have had the conversation so many times, I want to open it up to the CinemaBlend readers, so you can hammer this out in the comments section. The headline defines our parameters. We are not trying to debate the best Die Hard movie. It's the first movie. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain wrong.

But the debate over the sequels rages on. Personally, I'm a Die Hard 2: Die Harder guy. Here's why: I think a Die Hard movie is defined by a cramped space. It's confined to an office building, or -- in the case of Renny Harlin's bone-crunching sequel -- a busy airport on Christmas Eve. The Christmas setting helps, but I think the moment With A Vengeance opens up the playing field to all of Manhattan (and, later, Canada), it stops being a true Die Hard movie.

Also, Die Hard 2 has a component that I find to be crucial. John McClane (Bruce Willis) needs to be the right guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. This box is checked in Die Harder, but is NOT in With a Vengeance. In fact, to make matters worse, McClane is dragged into the action in the third movie, and never really goes through the hoops to stop Simon because he actually wants to. In the first two movies, McClane fights hard to stop the bad guys for his own personal reasons... and because he believes it's the right thing to do. Never once in Vengeance do I believe that McClane is stepping up to act because he thinks he's doing the right thing. He actually resists it every step of the way. That's not My John McClane (trademark). That's just Bruce Willis in another routine buddy cop thriller.

To that end, I'd almost suggest that the fourth movie, Live Free or Die Hard, feels more like a traditional Die Hard movie than its immediate predecessor. It's McClane being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's McClane standing up for what's right. The presence of Justin Long prevents me from ever considering Live Free as the best Die Hard sequel, but it's far better than we could have hoped.

And A Good Day To Die Hard is far worse that we could have imagined. We debated this on the ReelBlend podcast recently, if you want to hear that full conversation. It was eye-opening!

Die Hard 2 is the best if you ignore that it's essentially the same script as the first one. With a Vengeance expands the scope as far as it can realistically go imo, and connects to the first one in a way that makes sense and plausibly drags John McClane back into the action.

Die Hard With A Vengeance is generally considered by most fans to be the best sequel in the series, primarily because it references the events of the first, so Die Hard 6 will likely try to capitalize on that idea yet again. We will just have to wait and see if the decision pays off.

Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi has finally started to come to the end of its theatrical release. The movie has made a lot of money at the box office, and it certainly lives up to the spectacle-oriented reputation of the Star Wars franchise. That said, not all theatrical experiences with the film have been universally positive, as a Long Island, New York woman was recently arrested for allegedly striking a toddler during a screening of the film. You read that correctly, and it is a situation that only gets more bizarre as you learn more details about it.

The ordeal reportedly went down on January 2, but the official arrest was made last week. According to the report, 25-year-old Keri Karman and her father Charlie Karman were arrested following an allegedly violent encounter with Celia Riggs and her daughter Harley at an AMC theater. When the toddler made noise by asking her mother for popcorn, Karman allegedly got angry and confronted the family during the most recent Star Wars movie, going so far as to put her middle finger up to the child's cheek. She then reportedly proceeded to dump her tub of popcorn on Harley and subsequently strike her with the empty container.

Based upon the New York Post's report of the incident, it seems that Keri and Charlie Karman quickly fled the theater following the encounter with the Riggs family, and Celia Riggs then proceeded to exit the theater with her children and mother (her husband was reportedly in the bathroom during the actual assault) and waited for the police to arrive. After the incident, Harley Riggs was crying and left with a bruise from the popcorn tub. Now that they are in custody, Keri and Charlie Karman have both been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

This encounter is not the first incident of violence at a movie theater that we have reported on in recent days. Just last month, the story broke of a man being arrested for firing a gun at a movie theater, as well as a woman who fired a gun outside of a busy theater. There seems to be no shortage of odd stories like these coming out of the world of movie theaters, and we will make sure to bring you more information related to all of these weird happenings as new details become available to us.

Of course, despite this bizarre encounter, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still in select theaters.
