J.K. Rowling Hinted At Credence's Crimes Of Grindelwald Twist Years Ago

Warning: The following contains massive SPOILERS for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald!

It's been over a month since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released, but Potterheads are still reeling from the story's final twist that saw Gellert Grindelwald reveal to Credence Barebone that he is in fact Aurelius Dumbledore. It was a shocking and confusing revelation for fans that seemed to come out of nowhere. However, it turns out that in true J.K. Rowling fashion, the author and the film's screenwriter hinted at the twist years ago.

On the "Answers" page of J.K. Rowling's official website, there is a banner at the top that, amongst other things, shows a copy of Loeb Classical Library's Marcus Aurelius, which contains what is more commonly referred to as the Roman Emperor's Meditations. So right at the top of J.K Rowling's own website, under the page labeled "Answers," something we are all looking for after the Credence reveal, is the name Aurelius. Take a look:

The name of the fourth, and previously unknown, Dumbledore sibling is right there, plain as day on J.K. Rowling's website. You have to appreciate the cleverness and how much fun J.K. Rowling is having with the fans by putting it on the "Answers" page too.

This incredible hint isn't a new addition to J.K. Rowling's site after the release of Crimes of Grindelwald either. Hypable, which noticed the hint, dug into the site's source code and found that the image was uploaded all the way back in October of 2016. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in this pentalogy, where we first met Ezra Miller's Credence Barebone, didn't come out until November of 2016.

That means that J.K. Rowling was throwing out a hint about the second film in the franchise before the first film even came out. That is some truly wild stuff. It's amazing because despite the fact that it has been out there in plain view for fans to spot for ages, there's really no way anyone could have known what it meant prior to the reveal in the film.

We thought we knew everything we needed to know about, or at least the number of, Dumbledore siblings. Thus the hint was both obvious and opaque. This is classic J.K. Rowling too. The author planted seeds throughout the early Harry Potter novels that seemed minor or inconsequential at the time, but wound up playing a major part down the line and in the series' endgame.

While I personally have major reservations about the Credence twist, this hint years ago reinforces the fact that J.K. Rowling has this whole story plotted out in her head, and hopefully it will all pay off in a satisfactory manner in the end.

For those that slept through history class and thought Gladiator would be a good substitute, Marcus Aurelius (played by original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris in the aforementioned film) was a Roman Emperor who ruled the empire from 160 to 180 A.D. Known as The Philosopher, Marcus Aurelius was the last emperor to rule over what is considered the Pax Romana period, which saw peace and stability in the empire.

Marcus Aurelius ruled alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Verus for a period of time before Lucius died. That is particularly interesting considering the reveal about Aurelius and Albus Dumbledore being siblings. One has to wonder if J.K. Rowling was merely taking a historical name for her character because she appreciated the philosopher's writings and his name, or if she is actually drawing inspiration from his life.

This hint on J.K. Rowling's website will likely now set off a period of serious investigation for internet sleuths. Scouring Marcus Aurelius' Meditations for clues about where the Fantastic Beasts story might go seems like one avenue. Another is to look for more signs and symbols on J.K. Rowling's website. The page where we see the name Aurelius also shows images of a scribbled on paper, a pair of glasses and a pinecone. What does the pinecone mean?!?!

Fortunately, we shouldn't have to wait until the fifth film to find out some answers to our many questions. J.K. Rowling has hinted that "Answers are given" in Fantastic Beasts 3, so I imagine once that film is released, we can expect to find out plenty of hints that missed over the next two years.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is scheduled for release on November 20, 2020. For movies hitting a little bit sooner, check out our 2019 release schedule.

It was a shocking and confusing revelation for fans that seemed to come out of nowhere. However, it turns out that in true J.K. Rowling fashion, the author and the film's screenwriter hinted at the twist years ago.

Why The Greatest Showman Had To Bribe Keala Settle With Whiskey To Get Her To Audition

Why The Greatest Showman Had To Bribe Keala Settle With Whiskey To Get Her To Audition

The Holiday season is prime real estate during the yearly film schedule, as major blockbusters are released for cinephiles and families that have some extra time on their hands. One genre that seems to often utilize this date are movie musicals, as we've seen through releases like Les Miserables, Into the Woods, and Chicago. This past holiday season brought us The Greatest Showman, a musical romp loosely based off the life of P.T. Barnum. With it came the new anthem "This Is Me," which won a Golden Globe and picked up an Oscar nomination along the way. But it turns out that singer/actress Keala Settle had to be bribed to audition for the role of Bearded Lady Lettie Lutz. Namely, because fellow Broadway star Shoshana Bean had previously recorded the demo, Settle thought she might be better. As she tells it,

I said, 'Hell, no!' I knew Shoshana had done the demo and I said, 'You call her, tell her to come and sing it, and I'll sing back up for her.' Because I'm a huge fan, I love her voice. I love who she is as an artist. And when I heard her sing it I went, 'Well, nobody else is going to sing this.' And to be honest, I still don't think anybody else can sing it except Sho. So I tried with everything to dodge that bullet.

While Keala Settle's voice has impressed million through her role in The Greatest Showman, as well as her long history on Broadway, it seems she was lacking the last bit of confidence regarding belting out "This Is Me." Shoshana Bean (Wicked) is another powerhouse vocalist, and Settle seemed to, ahem, settle for the background at first approach.

The folks behind the film ultimately wanted Keala Settle to come in and audition for Lettie Lutz, and they were willing to do whatever it took in order to get the best talent in the room. So what exactly did it take to bribe Settle? Turns out, it's a bottle of Jamo, courtesy of Hugh Jackman and director Michael Gracey. As she told Variety,

Finally when it was time to do it, T-minus one day, Hugh and Michael came up to me and said, 'What is it going to take for you to sing this song?' I said, 'If you buy me a bottle of Jameson, I'll do it.' They kept it in a bag and said, 'This is yours if you sing the song.' I'm very cheap that way.

Everyone involved seemed to make the right call, as Keala Settle has performed the powerhouse anthem all over the country at this point. While you may have seen her on Broadway in shows like Les Miserables and Waitress, The Greatest Showman proved to be a star making moment for her.

You can catch The Greatest Showman On Demand and for home purchase. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Making Shazam! A Christmas Movie Presented All Sorts Of Challenges

By  at September 28, 2019  , , ,  No comments
Making Shazam! A Christmas Movie Presented All Sorts Of Challenges

For decades we've been debating whether or not Die Hard a movie released in July, that takes place during the holidays, should be considered a "Christmas movie." Get ready for the next big holiday debate, because Shazam! will also be set during the happiest season of all, even though it will be released in April. Last year I got a chance to visit the set of the new DC movie and director David F. Sandberg explained that while the film's themes lent themselves to a Christmas setting, the decision to do so kinda sucked because filming in Toronto in the winter is no fun. According to Sandberg...

It's a lot about family and Christmastime and this family holiday. And it's about finding your family with these foster kids and everything. So yeah, it was just very appropriate for the story. It just meant that we had to shoot it here in winter, which has been pretty brutal. Shoot it all on location during nights, because they were like ... They were telling me like, 'If you shoot the carnival during the day, you get more kid hours, everything will be easier.' And I was like, 'Well, it's not gonna look good with all the lights and everything.' So yeah, so we've been shooting it during the nights and it's been pretty miserable.

In addition to dealing with the weather in Toronto, which had suffered an ice storm shortly before I arrived, there was the added issue that many of the actors are minors. Because they were under 18, there were limits to how much they could work in a given day, and that many more limits if the kids worked into the night.

Certainly, things would have been easier if the movie had been filmed at a different time of year. However, since the idea of family is an important aspect of the film, the group of foster kids all needed to be there, and because a major sequence takes place at a winter carnival, a lot of the movie had to be shot at night. My set visit was a fairly cold experience during the day. I got to see the carnival set that David F. Sandberg refers to here but it was during the day, and as David F. Sandberg says here, it just wouldn't have looked impressive on film.

While the experience of making the movie might not have been that much fun, the final result, as least as far as the trailers go, look quite fun. The story of Shazam! sees a 14-year-old boy (Asher Angel) living every kid's dream when he's given superpowers. The character certainly has fun, even if the actor did not.

Shazam! will be out in theaters in April which means it will likely be hitting Blu-ray in time to be available for Christmas season. Will Shazam! become a new Christmas action movie staple? The cast and crew would probably appreciate that considering the work they put in for it.
