Spider-Man: Far From Home May Be Hiding A Classic Villain In Plain Sight

Spider-Man has one of the deepest Rogues Galleries next to maybe only Batman on screen. There are so many different places that new Spider-Man movies can go with villains, that we can now see enemies like The Vulture (Michael Keaton) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the MCU for the first time because the previous Sony films already have exhausted classic comic characters like Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus.

But the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man movies also have the ability to seed the backgrounds with potential villain possibilities. Michael Mando played Mac Gargan, aka Scorpion, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And there is a character named Dimitri in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home who may or may not be set up to eventually become The Chameleon.

We asked Far From Home director Jon Watts specifically about the rumor that actor Numan Acar, who plays Dimitri, was being set up to be The Chameleon on screen, and the director revealed:

Well, Dmitri in the film works for Nick Fury and I think anyone who works for Nick Fury, they certainly have a mysterious past. We're not specifically saying that he's [Chameleon]... but we're not not saying.

The character of Dimitri shows up in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in the trailer. He works for Nick Fury, and he can be seen to the left of Peter in this shot:

But when CinemaBlend visited the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home last year, we learned even more about how Dimitri will be used in the story.

As it turns out, Nick Fury really will hijack Peter Parkers European vacation. After Fury recruits Spidey in Venice, he plans to place Dimitri on the class bus, taking the place of the driver, so he can drive Peter to locations where the Elementals are showing up. Executive Producer Eric Carroll walked us through the bulk of the plot for Far From Home, and told us this about Dimitri:

One of the guys on Nick's team is played by Numan Acar. He's a fantastic actor. And he's got this really great thing where he looks super imposing. He looks like the sort of guy you'd expect to be a mercenary. But he's hilarious. Just one of the funniest actors. So now you've got this really scary-looking mercenary driving these kids around Europe. So, they get rerouted [by Fury]. They drive through the Alps, and there's a fun character set piece here where Peter, who now has access to some technology in the wake of having met up with Nick Fury, tries to use that technology for iffy purposes. and almost blows up his bus by launching some weaponized drones that this spy team has access to.

It sounds almost like Jon Watts is asking Numan Acar to disguise himself as the school bus driver to stay near Peter Parker on this trip, and bring him to the places Nick Fury needs Spider-Man to be. Could he be a chameleon, working for Fury?

For those who might not be aware, The Chameleon is Spider-Mans earliest foe, appearing in issue No. 1 of The Amazing Spider-Man comics, dating back to 1963. Hes a master of disguise, a villain whose face is featureless and can basically pretend to be anyone. Hes also related to Kraven the Hunter, and damn if Numan Acar doesnt look like hed make an amazing Kraven, as well.

But we cant get too far ahead of ourselves here. Spider-Man: Far From Home already has Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), and four Elemental creatures who are meant to represent MCU versions of Hydro-Man, Sandman, Molten Man and more.

Well see if the Chameleon really is in the cards when Spider-Man: Far From Home opens in theaters on July 2.

Sebastian Stan might already have his next project lined up then, which he'll co-lead with Anthony Mackie, but the actor would still be down for a prequel movie that explored Bucky's dark past

What The Blair Witch Projects Joshua Leonard Thinks About Get Out And The State Of Horror

What The Blair Witch Projects Joshua Leonard Thinks About Get Out And The State Of Horror

The horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance right now. Rather than stale franchises and torture porn, there are new and original horror movies hitting theaters every few months. Acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh is even getting in on the action, with his new psychological thriller Unsane. The film has been getting a ton of press for it being completely shot on an iPhone, but horror fans will also be pleased with its cast. Playing opposite The Crown's Claire Foy is actor Joshua Leonard, who is perhaps best known for his iconic role in 1999's The Blair Witch Project. I recently asked him what he thought of the state of the genre, especially in the wake of Get Out's recent Oscar win. The Unsane star told me,

I was so glad that Get Out got recognized, because it was as technically great and socially relevant and well written and executed as any of the other movies last year. I think it's another example of a film that plays as a traditional thriller, but also Trojan Horses its way into other issues that are socially relevant. And that's one of the great things from the genre. And I love that we're moving farther away from the slasher film and the kill count, to the opportunity to say something, but do it in a fun and scary way.

Joshua Leonard has seen the horror genre go in many places in the nearly 20 years since he made his debut in The Blair Witch Project, especially in the past few years. With Get Out having broken the door for horror movies to possibly become award fodder, it seems like the future is wide open for future thrillers to possibly get nominations.

Get Out is one of the most widely successful films of last year, and Jordan Peele's directorial debut quickly became a massive pop culture moment. The film tackled difficult issues of race, while also providing plenty of scares and fun for audiences. It's this tradition that Joshua Leonard seems to hope continues. Just because a movie is scary doesn't necessarily mean that it can't also have a message. Other than run away from danger.

Meanwhile, Unsane is tackling its own set of issues. The psychological thriller centers around a woman named Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) who is suffering from trauma related to her stalker (Joshua Leonard). In addition to bringing attention to issues revolving around mental health issues, it also seems to be making a statement about the mental health and system in the country. Sawyer is essentially tricked into being admitted, which may or may not have to do with her medical insurance's ability to pay for a week's stay.

You can judge the message of Unsane for yourself now, as it's currently in theaters. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

How Judy Garland Would Feel About Lady Gaga In A Star Is Born, According To Liza Minnelli

How Judy Garland Would Feel About Lady Gaga In A Star Is Born, According To Liza Minnelli

When Lady Gaga took on her Oscar-nominated role of Ally in A Star Is Born, she was following a role previously held by Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland, and Barbara Striesand. Each actress had her own spin on the classic Hollywood story and played the role in a completely different era.

Due to Judy Garlands passing in 1969 at the early age of 47-years-old, she never knew her critically-acclaimed role would be revisited two times after her. Her 1954 take was a remake of the 1937 classic, long before reboots and reimaginings were frequently in Hollywoods vocabulary.

Her daughter Liza Minnelli weighed in with how she thought Judy Garland would feel about Lady Gagas A Star Is Born performance. In Minnelli's words to ET:

She would have laughed. And then she would have gotten into it. I can hear her saying, 'OK, let's go!' Great to the end!

Its certainly would have been flattering for Judy Garland to see one of her roles -- now over 60-years-old -- is still relevant and being explored today. Not only that, the new Star Is Born was met with high praise from critics and $434 million at the box office worldwide. One of the biggest pop stars in the world took on the role, with Bradley Cooper, her James Mason, also helming the feature.

However, when Judy Garland took on A Star Is Born during her era, she played an actress and singer who starts making it on the stage with the help of James Masons Norman Maine. The story has since been switched up, now centering around a young singer who gets caught up in a love affair while on the road with a famous musician.

This aspect of the plot was changed with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristoffersons version in the 70s to match a generation obsessed with Bob Dylan, the Stones, and Bowie. The most recent remake has Gaga playing a pop star in the making, to better reflect the most popular acts of our age.

Its interesting to see how pop culture has shifted with each of the four iterations of A Star Is Born. For example, they all deal with alcoholism as a central theme, but the 2018 movie was the first to really frame it as a mental health issue.

Although Liza Minnelli said her mother would be into the new Star Is Born, she isnt sure how she feels about the upcoming biopic about her, titled Judy. Rene Zellweger is playing Judy Garland in a drama about her final show run, amidst dealing with drug addiction, her management, and marriage to Mickey Dean, six months before she died from an accidental overdose.

Liza Minnelli had previously made it clear that she does not approve of the film, but in her recent words she said: I just hope they don't do what they always do. Judy comes out on September 27.
