Newest Infinity War Trailer Crushes It, But Can't Beat Other Infinity War Trailer

In our current blockbuster age the release of an anticipated trailer is an event almost on par with the release of the movies themselves. There are few films in recent memory as anticipated as Avengers: Infinity War, and every trailer for the film has drawn excitement and speculation. With a little over a month until its release, a new final trailer debuted last Friday to give us a last glimpse at the cosmic clash. This trailer was a blast and revealed quite a lot about the film, but it couldn't quite top the first trailer in terms of total number of views in its first day.

The trailer that debuted on Friday to coincide with tickets going on sale was viewed an incredible 179 million times in the first 24 hours, making it the third biggest trailer release in history. It also now stands as the biggest release for a film's second trailer, besting the live-action Beauty and the Beast's 128 million views according to The Hollywood Reporter. The biggest release for a trailer overall, however, was the first trailer for Infinity War, which had a hype video heralding its coming and gave us our first look at the battle with Thanos. That trailer set the ridiculous mark of 230 million views in the first 24 hours when it debuted back in November. For those curious about the second biggest trailer release, it was the first trailer for IT, which racked up 197 million views as people flocked to see the Pennywise for a new generation.

Now second trailers usually fall short of the first so its not surprising that the first trailer for Infinity War set the bar so high. The build to see something, anything from the biggest event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a long time coming and fans rushed to get that first look. The second look, while still exciting, couldn't have matched that, kind of like how The Last Jedi stood little chance of matching The Force Awakens at the box office, regardless of reception, the build just wasn't the same.

Comparing the two trailers, there's a lot to like in each. The first trailer was more about tone and mood, letting fans know that the threat that has been teased for ages will finally arrive. I also like the score a lot better in the first trailer. The second trailer is more Thanos-centric, giving audiences a better idea of who the villains are and their goal. This final trailer also has a lot more humor and makes the plot of this movie much clearer for audiences who can't name all the Infinity Stones and their current locations off the top of their heads.

It is kind of funny that trailer releases are a metric worthy of analysis these days, but they do give fans a good idea of the interest and enthusiasm related to a particular movie. Needless to say, enthusiasm is high with this one, and that fervor bore out when Infinity War became the best advance-selling superhero movie of all time in a mere six hours. So it's safe to say that all those views will translate into lots of very real dollars when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.

Harrison Ford's return to the Star Wars franchise more than three decades after Return of the Jedi's release was short-lived. As advertised, Han Solo played a major role in The Force Awakens, but towards the end of the movie, he met his demise at the hands of his own son, Ben, a.k.a. Kylo Ren. It was a tragic moment, to be sure, and with The Last Jedi taking place immediately after The Force Awakens, there was rumblings that the latest Star Wars movie would feature Han's funeral. Alas, such a scene wasn't shown in The Last Jedi, as director Rian Johnson felt that there wasn't enough time to pause and grieve more for the beloved smuggler. Johnson explained:

[There was no debate of showing Han Solo's funeral], just because pacing-wise it didn't have a place. It's tough in Star Wars because I always think about the mourning that Luke gives to Ben's death, which is all of four-and-a-half seconds before, 'Come on kid we're not out of this yet' and then boom, you're into 'Yay, woo-hoo! Don't get cocky!' There's the moment for it, but it's not long. We don't have time for our sorrows, commanders. That's kind of the thing of Star Wars; you don't really linger on grief because you're moving forward.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't waste any time jumping into the action, as The Resistance had to evacuate D'Qar when The First Order arrived to unleash its revenge for the destruction of Starkiller Base. So because of the quick pacing, Rian Johnson believed there just wasn't room to fit in Han Solo's funeral, noting how Luke Skywalker didn't have long to mourn Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope before he had to start shooting down TIE Fighters with Han. With all the insanity happening after The Last Jedi's opening crawl, pausing to watch his allies play one last tribute to him just wasn't doable.

However, later during the Collider Q&A, Rian Johnson did mention that for one of the early scenes, he had the camera linger on General Leia Organa for a little bit to show her being weighed down by everything that was happening, including Han Solo's recent death. Johnson said:

I think we do it a little more in this movie than typically is done. I really held onto that moment of Leia before they come out of hyperspace, just that moment of feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders... It was never something where there was an organic place for it like, 'Oh it would go here.' It was always something like, 'We wanna get this right up on our feet and going from the start.'

It's worth noting that even though Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't show Han Solo's funeral, fans will still have the opportunity to see this event depicted. It was announced last week that The Last Jedi novelization, which hits shelves on March 6, will feature the funeral as one of the pieces of extra material included in this version of the story. So for those of you who wanted to see The Resistance give a proper goodbye to Han, make sure to pick up a copy of the book next month.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still showing in theaters, and this trilogy will conclude when Episode IX is released on December 20, 2019. For those of you interested in what Han Solo was up to in his younger years, you can find out when Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives on May 25.

The "celebrity interview" process can be horrible, for various reasons. Journalists are tasked with coming up with questions that talent hasn't heard 1,000 -- often in the same day. Talent has to field left-field attempts by reporters to get a juicy soundbite. But Melissa McCarthy faced a shockingly humiliating situation when she was promoting her breakout hit Bridesmaids, where the interviewer zeroed in on her body type. McCarthy was doing an interview in behalf of her latest dramedy Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and recalled:

I do remember another interview I did for Bridesmaids with somebody who later lost his job for a conversation he had on a bus with someone else. I won't mention names, but just think about it. He kept asking, 'Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?' ... He was like, 'Oh, your tremendous size, you can actually work?' I just remember all the blood drained out of me. I thought, 'With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly.' There were two cameras on him, and one was on me, and he went back to that question three or four times, and I just kept talking about the script or how fun Paul Feig was. He was looking around like, 'She's crazy.' When we left, their producer was horrified and said, 'We'll never play what he said. I'm so sorry.' But it happens all the time, to the point where it's fascinating because they don't do it to men. Not to be a jerk or single him out, but when John Goodman was heavier, did anybody ever talk about his girth?

Melissa McCarthy was talking to InStyle about the double standard that she has encountered from some members of the press as she is trying to promote her movies. The recollection of the horrific Bridesmaids interview -- which HAS to be a reference to Billy Bush, right? -- was triggered by McCarthy recalling another reporter who questioned why she always looks so sloppy and unkempt in her on-screen roles. Sure, McCarthy sometimes plays messy characters in her comedies, but what kind of a question is that?

Melissa McCarthy brings up a good point in this regard. Certain male comedians -- I think of the late Chris Farley and John Candy right away -- were celebrated because of their size, and the way that they used their physicality to get a laugh. Farley notoriously sang "Fat Guy In A Little Coat" in his cult hit Tommy Boy. How often did a reporter incredulously ask him is his "tremendous size" impeded his ability to find work?

But the comedian gets the last laugh here, does she not? She was nominated for an Oscar for Bridesmaids. She's still headlining major movies, and is doing this interview on behalf of Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which is getting all sorts of awards play. She was nominated for Best Actress at the Globes for that movie.

I don't buy that the studio interfered and made the movie bad. Because we have twenty one other Marvel movies that indicate studio micromanagement has not been a problem for the MCU. If anything, my guess is that Marvel saw what a mess the movie was, and stepped in to try and clean it up.
