New The Meg Footage Has Giant Shark Eating A Cage Diver Whole

If shark movies have taught us anything over the years (besides to avoid the ocean at all costs), it is that dive cages afford you some degree of protection from the watery killing machines. Sometimes a cage will hold the monsters off entirely, leaving you free to taunt your would-be consumers. Other times the cage merely delays the inevitable as the sharks slowly break away your defenses, but still allowing you time to formulate a plan. This summer's The Meg will afford no such luxuries to its victims, and dive cages will not save anyone. Check out The Meg's prehistoric beast eating a cage diver whole in the video below:

Wow, the Megalodon just totally housed that guy! It didn't even bother to chew and just took that dive cage, complete with chewy diver center, straight to the head. That is both frightening and awesome. I guess that diver will just have to set up shop inside the Megalodon like Geppetto in the whale. I would say that stars Jason Statham, Ruby Rose Li Bingbing and Rainn Wilson are going to need a bigger boat, but with a shark this big, would that even make a difference? Jason Statham's onscreen martial arts moves are impressive, but I'm not sure what punching and kicking are going to do here. Exploding this thing from the inside Jaws style might be the only way for the oceans to ever be safe again.

The fun thing about showing the Megalodon devouring a cage diver in their cage is that it reflects how The Meg may play with the tropes we are used to in shark movies. We expect certain things from shark movies and the heroes trying to survive them and The Meg can have some fun with that and show that the rules don't apply when the shark is a 75-foot prehistoric leviathan.

These kind of clips often precede new trailers, so hopefully this new footage from The Meg's Twitter account means that we'll be getting another full trailer soon. John Turteltaub's film looks like it may be playing things a little tongue-in-cheek judging by the first trailer, so I'm curious how it will balance the ridiculousness with the action and how much it will go for legitimate scares. The Meg does somewhat have that classic monster movie vibe of being a little silly and a little scary, and being the kind of movie you walk out of with a smile on your face. If nothing else, this little clip shows that we should be in store for some fun action scenes with the Megalodon eating things that other, punier sharks would be forced to nibble at.

Feeding time begins when The Meg splashes into theaters on August 10. Take a look at all of this year's biggest movies in our release schedule. For all of the latest in movie news and why you should always chew your food, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Top Gun 2 Has Added Jon Hamm And More To Its Cast

Top Gun 2 Has Added Jon Hamm And More To Its Cast

The cast of the upcoming Top Gun sequel has been growing fast, but the long-awaited project just added even more names, including a couple of potentially big ones. Mad Men star Jon Hamm has come on board the film, as has Academy Award nominee Ed Harris. While neither role has been revealed, names like this don't tend to be added for small, unimportant parts. In addition to these two big names, Lewis Pullman, an up and coming actor, and the son of actor Bill Pullman, has also joined the cast.

An entire laundry list of actors recently joined Top Gun: Maverick, but few of them were names most movie fans would recognize. Now, according to Deadline, we have two significant names that have joined the cast. Jon Hamm made his name on the AMC series Mad Men but has since made the transition to film with roles in movies like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and the more recent comedy Tag. He'll next be seen as part of the ensemble cast of Bad Times at the El Royale.

One of his co-stars in that last movie will actually be Lewis Pullman, who will join Hamm in the Top Gun sequel. Pullman has also been seen in Battle of the Sexes and The Strangers: Prey at Night.

Ed Harris has played hard-nosed military types before, so seeing him as part of Top Gun: Maverick is fairly easy. While his role is still a mystery, seeing him as the head of the Top Gun school where Tom Cruise's character works, or some other high ranking military official, isn't exactly a stretch.

Top Gun: Maverick will follow Tom Cruise's Pete Mitchell as an instructor at the flight school he attended in the original film. The son of his former partner and friend Goose, who will be played by Miles Teller, attends the school and Cruise becomes a mentor to the young pilot.

It's more than a little amazing that after all the talk of a sequel to Top Gun that's been going on ever since the original film became a massive hit, it's finally happening. Most of us had written this one off a long time ago, but here we are. Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for release in July of 2019.

Why Eddie Brock Is The Perfect Host For Venom, According To Tom Hardy

Why Eddie Brock Is The Perfect Host For Venom, According To Tom Hardy

Venom is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character. There's a man inside of that sleek black suit. But there's also an alien who communicates with the man, and the two must work in tandem -- a symbiosis -- if Venom is going to be the lethal protector that fans envision. The Venom symbiote, both in the comics and on the screen in the new movie, bonds with Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy), so during a recent Venom press day, we asked Hardy why Brock was the ideal host for this alien creature. And Hardy tells CinemaBlend:

I think Eddie is a professional coward. ... So it's easy for a symbiote to take advantage of him. Certainly in the portrayal -- I wanted it to come across as this, but he's like, there's a part of him that galvanizes as a strong crusader for morality, fighting for the underdog and speaking up for those who aren't heard. And there's a deeply self-centered narcissism that also surrounds him, because he does it to the detriment of the people that he loves and cares about. And then Venom turns up, and there's an audacity for this thing to turn up and live inside him. It conflicts Eddie. That [he] then has to negotiate the terms of somebody else's ethical framework, which is from another planet, which forces his feet to the fire, to actually understand his own idiosyncrasies and flaws.

What a terrific take on the odd relationship formed between Eddie Brock and the symbiote. What you will begin to see, when Ruben Fleischer's movie opens in theaters later this week (and this isn't exactly a spoiler), is that the alien symbiote brought to Earth by the Life Foundation tries to bond with numerous hosts... and the process ends badly for the humans.

But when Venom connects with Eddie Brock, the two share a connection that neither anticipated, and it allows them to form a union that will first pit them against the menacing Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and, eventually, against all manner of evil beings.

Here's Tom Hardy opening up on his interpretation of why Eddie is the right guy to play host to Venom in the movie Venom:

Of course, in the comics, Eddie and Venom bond over a hatred of Spider-Man. That can't be the case in this new movie, so Ruben Fleischer and his screenwriters have to come up with new reasons as to why the alien symbiote would work with this human who he keeps calling a "loser." Will they find a way to work together? And where will their relationship go from here? Keep reading CinemaBlend, and all of our coverage from the recent Venom junket, to find out!
