There Are Lots Of Different Reasons Captain Marvel Is Set In The Past

One of the more interesting things about Captain Marvel is its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the MCU has told a mostly chronological story since the debut of Iron Man, the next film in the franchise will drop back in time a couple of decades to the 1990s. It turns out, there actually a lot of different reasons why this decision makes sense. First and foremost, it takes the MCU back to a point when it's not full of heroes, which will give Brie Larson's Captain Marvel the space to shine on her own. It's giving Carol a place in the cinematic universe that she can carve out for her own, where she wasn't one superheroine out of many.

The Marvel Universe has expanded quite a bit on film in 10 years, and there're now more heroes and villains than we know what to do with. There's more than one reason to not make Captain Marvel just another face in the crowd as Jonathan Schwartz tells Entertainment Weekly Marvel wanted to do. Being the first female hero to headline her own Marvel movie, it's nice to be able to give her some space to see what she can do. In addition, the story of the MCU is putting a lot of weight on her to come in and save the day in Avengers 4, which makes her important, another reason to give her separation from the rest.

Of course, that's not the only reason that we've been given as to why setting the movie in the 1990s is important. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had previously stated an interest in looking at the MCU at a point when nobody, not even Nick Fury, knew that superpowered individuals existed.

We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, 'You're part of a big universe. You just don't know yet.' Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn't know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across.

Kevin Feige also gave yet another reason for setting the film in the 1990s. It seems that, in addition to taking place there, Captain Marvel will also be something of a throwback when it comes to the film's action. Marvel seemingly wanted to do something a little different when it came to the storytelling, and by making a movie in the 90s, the studio had an excuse to make a 90s action movie. According to Feige...

The answer is, you'll see in the storytelling of the movie. But it allows us to play in an area that we have never played in before and tapping into a '90s action genre was fun for us and being able to see an earlier part of the MCU before Nick Fury knew anything about aliens or anything about super-powered people and also tapping into the Kree-Skrull War, which in the comics was a huge part of the comic mythology, seemed like a fun thing to try and a fun way to give Carol Danvers her own standalone origin story.

While setting Captain Marvel so early in the MCU timeline seemed like an odd choice at the beginning, it's clear that Marvel has really thought this through and had many reasons for doing so. We'll see them all plan out when Captain Marvel hits theaters next year.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Pokemon Detective Pikachu Ticket

Whenever theres a 3D movie presented to the public, its a fair assumption that it wants to be the very best, like no one ever was. So when Pokemon Detective Pikachu announced it was going into the third dimension, you could very well imagine that one of its causes, besides entertaining the masses and bringing Pokemon to live action, would be that very prospect.

But as weve seen in the past, ambition can be hobbled by slip ups here and there. So we naturally find ourselves asking that big question life likes to hand us from time to time: to 3D or not to 3D? If you want to see what we thought of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, you can pika pika your way over to our official review and read the rundown.

For now though, its time to slip on those classic black glasses, pour another round of coffee (extra shot, black as night, thank you so much) and see if Detective Pikachus big adventure is worth the extra ticket money, or if youd be better off buying a coffee to help keep you buzzed through the film.

Taking one look at the trailers for Pokemon Detective Pikachu, you could see that the 3D could be strong with this one. Between the amazing abilities that Pokemon execute in battles and life-saving danger, and the world of Ryme City being so lushly drawn, there was no way that this was going to stay a standard 2D film for long. Putting the right post-conversion job on this film would make Pokemon Detective Pikachu a marvel to behold.

In the screening of Pokemon Detective Pikachu that I attended, there were definitely some flaws in the presentation. However, Im not so sure they were on the Planning & Effort side of the house, as the visuals held up rather well. The biggest issue I ran into was, surprise surprise, the brightness of the picture. Since thats a big variable that depends on the location youre visiting to see a movie like Pokemon Detective Pikachu, I cant lay that at the feet of the 3D crew; especially when the depth and projection of the films enhancements work so well.

While I would have expected more visual assets being thrown off of the screen and into the laps of the audience, Pokemon Detective Pikachu certainly doesnt let the Before The Window quotient go to waste. Theres some pretty impressive moments of objects being pointed at the screen, and even some good Pokemon attacks that do manage to come at the audience in brief moments. The large battle in the third act particularly uses this aspect of the visual palette well, because theres Pokemon flying into action, and towards the camera, for all to see.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu has an amazing amount of depth to be portrayed in its picture. From the streets of Ryme City, to the countryside and more natural areas of the films visuals, theres not only clear spatial reasoning between characters and their environments, theres an extra mile that lets the background go on for what feels like forever. Characters are also perfectly spaced from one another, so theres no confusion as to whos operating in which piece of the action.

And now we come to the greatest stumbling block for Pokemon Detective Pikachu. As promised, it was the brightness score that threatens to sink the high of seeing Pokemon on the silver screen, in true 3D glory. Now this ultimately comes down to how well your theater maintains its projectors, both in switching between 2D and 3D screenings, as well as maintaining a healthy bulb life. In the case of my screening of the film, the brightness was turned down way too low, which dulled the colors being presented on the screen more than they would be by just slipping on the glasses. Your mileage may vary on this factor, and its suggested you see this 3D presentation in a theater you know to be maintaining their gear.

If your eyes get tired, or your mind gets curious during a 3D film, youll want to slip those glasses off and see what the world looks like without the aid of polarized lenses. Which leads to you, the audience, seeing that classic 3D blur that folks have been talking about for ages. Usually, the blur means that the picture is being manipulated to a certain extent, in order to make everything more 3D like; and in the case of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, theres a real good quotient of blur. Except for some scattered 2D aspects, which tend to be included to help anchor things down or give the eye a break, theres a lot of blur to the picture. The backgrounds especially benefit from the blur, which more than likely explains the impressive depths of this films picture.

One major factor that knocks down the Audience Health score for Pokemon Detective Pikachu is the lack of brightness. When a film is this dim, you start to feel your eyes getting tired, and you might get crankier than a Psyduck without its spa music. But in addition to that piece of the 3D puzzle wearing on the eye, theres a couple transitions that feel like they wonk out the 3D picture a little extra. A scene involving a commute on a high speed train is an example of where the eye will be confused, as the panning involved in that shot blurs things a little. You wont get nauseous, but you might need to take your glasses off more than usual.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a beautiful movie to look at, with some impressive 3D elements that could be even more impressive if shown correctly. Its hard to totally judge the 3D component, with a screening that was so dark as the one I encountered, but Id be willing to say that its exciting enough to take a chance and see it in a theater you trust to be up to snuff. But if you end up seeing the film in 2D instead, just make sure the screen you see it on is nice and crisp, because this film deserves as clear a picture as possible.

The new Halloween is a film which discounts every previous sequel in the franchise in order to pay homage to the original film from 1978. While many of the film's references may be obvious to fans of the original, there's one subtle moment that may have passed by many eagled-eyed viewers. In one scene, Jamie Lee Curtis is seen making herself a glass of strawberry milk, a decision that was made by Curtis because, when director David Gordon Green asked the actress what Laurie Strode might be doing on any given morning, she figured it would be the exact same thing she would have been doing as a teenager. And I went like this. [Snaps] She's making Nesquik strawberry milk. Because she's still frozen at 17, when she used to make strawberry milk in the morning. I came back from this movie remembering--this can be super fun and creative and collaborative! It kicked me into a creative space.

It's a minor detail, but one that makes a lot of sense considering the film. In the new Halloween Laurie Strode is dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. The events of the original Halloween have damaged her severely and she's either unwilling or unable to find the help necessary to deal with the trauma. To that end, Jamie Lee Curtis remembered one of the things her character did in the original film, starting the day off with a glass of strawberry milk, and decided she would still be doing that today because in her head she's still the same 17-year-old girl.

It's that sort of attention to detail that has helped make the new Halloween a hit, taking the box office crown for the second weekend in a row. Even if you didn't make the strawberry milk connection, I certainly didn't, it's that sort of detail that shows that the people involved in the new film were committed to making the new Halloween work by being a real follow up to the original film. There's little argument that at some point (exactly where may be up for debate) the Halloween sequels lost their way. The new movie is designed, among other things to be a course correction.

It's nice to see how collaborative a process the new Halloween movie was. Clearly writer and director David Gordon Green had ideas about the story he wanted to tell, but he considered Jamie Lee Curtis to be part of the team creating the story, not just an actress performing in the film. She tells Time she was given an opportunity to bring her own history with the franchise into the new movie and help craft her character the way she thought Laurie Strode would be after 40 years.
