Deadpool 2's Director Explains Why The Movie Decided To Open Up Right Before Solo

It sure feels like we've been through a crazy number of major summer releases already, doesn't it? From Avengers: Infinity War to Deadpool 2 to Solo: A Star Wars Story, we've seen blockbuster after blockbuster in a very short window of time. This is even more interesting when we consider the fact that Deadpool 2 moved up from its planned June 1, 2018 release date, which put it one week before Solo. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch has addressed the May release date, recently explaining that the uniqueness of the Deadpool brand gave them the confidence to compete. Leitch explained about the release date:

We always approached everything in Deadpool, Ryan and I, we tried to say, 'We can't operate from a place of fear. We knew we were going to open up near Han Solo, but we knew we also were going to make a... You know, Deadpool was a very special brand. And so, it was like, they're different movies and let's just aggressively go forward and make the best movie possible and who knows?

There's some serious validity to David Leitch's remarks about Deadpool 2's position on the summer release schedule. Unlike many other PG-13 brands that will debut this year, Deadpool 2 is part of a "very special brand" that has a rabid, built-in fanbase. Though a movie like Deadpool and a movie like Solo: A Star Wars Story arguably appeal to very similar audiences, David Leitch's comments to Comicbook.com assert that the nature of a Deadpool movie is what helped it perform so well in its opening weekend, earning $125 million compared to Solo's $84 million.

One notable element that likely helped Deadpool 2 in this regard was the A+ marketing campaign. Wade Wilson is a unique character who can insert himself into a broad range of products and advertising styles, so the folks behind the R-rated sequel were able to capitalize on Ryan Reynolds' knack for smartass wisecracking to deliver some amazing promotional material.

Ultimately, the perceived gamble of wedging Deadpool 2 between two major Disney releases seems to be paying off in the long run, even if it made a little less opening weekend than its predecessor. Even in a far more competitive release window, the Deadpool franchise has once again gone on to become a massive box office hit for the X-Men series, and the stage has been set for more R-rated mutant adventures involving Wade Wilson, Domino, Cable, and others when the X-Force movie debuts.

What Keanu Reeves Really Hoped To Accomplish With John Wick: Chapter 3

When getting into gear for a third entry in a series as kinetic and hard-edged as John Wick has been, a lot of effort has to go into what makes each film a bar raising spectacle. In the case of John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, star Keanu Reeves and the team backing him had a lot of specifics in mind when it came to making sure this latest sequel would top John Wick: Chapter 2 in all the right ways.

During a press day for the film, CinemaBlend was on hand to hear exactly what Reeves and company had hoped to accomplish from their latest venture into the underworld of assassins and honor bound codes that make John Wicks world so satisfying to revisit with each outing. Specifically, after learning John Wick: Chapter 3 was greenlighted, Keanu Reeves mentioned there were specific goals for this third film, saying,

The most exciting part was, first of all, [being] grateful that we had the chance to come back to it and tell another chapter. Yeah, I mean, we had a lot of hope and ambition, and we wanted to do a lot. You know, we wanted to open up the scale, the worlds of John Wick. We wanted to different kinds of action, but also raise the bar on the traditional kind of John Wick action, Gun-Fu.

While the world that John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum expands could go on forever and sequel ideas are theoretically limitless, more movies are not always a given. So, having a third time out is a thrilling prospect in and of itself, because director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves get another chance to outdo themselves in the name of audience satisfaction.

Judging not only by the audience reaction to the John Wick series, but also the results that John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum have brought to the table, that satisfaction seems pretty much guaranteed on both ends. So, this universes plans to expand outward into various mediums, such as the TV series The Continental, as well as any potential film sequels and spinoffs, dont seem like premature hopes but rather prudent plans for the future.

At the heart of it all though is that gratitude for the fans that made John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum possible, as well as thanks to those who helped in the filmmaking process as well. Keanu Reeves wasnt shy to express that sentiment, as he continued with the following during CinemaBlend's interview:

It was exciting to get into preparing for it. It was exciting to do it, wonderful new artists in the show: Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon. And characters we love [coming] back: Laurence Fishburne, the Bowery King, Ian McShanes Winston. There was excitement everywhere.

Its hard not to be enthusiastic about the world of John Wick, as its brought a new level of action filmmaking and stunt work to the attention of the world at large. On top of that, the franchises mixture of neo-noir storytelling alongside those aspects have made it into a gust of fresh air that knocks down tons of rival assassins when it arrives in theaters.

Of course, that excitement needs to spill out into the crowd, especially if John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum wants to compete with the box office hopefuls of this weekend, in the hopes of another return for future glory in its extremely wicked and colorful world. Mark Hamill Defends Unexpectedly Controversial Star Wars Reunion Photo

Star Wars' Mark Hamill has not been quiet about wishing the new trilogy ending the Skywalker Saga included a reunion for his Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford's Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher's Princess/General Leia Organa. So it wasn't exactly surprising or controversial when he tweeted a fan-made image doctoring a shot from the first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer, adding Han, Leia, and Luke next to Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. Hamill tagged that reunion photo with #MissedOpportunities:

However, the first comment under his tweet had this message:

You know this image comes from one of the alt-right portion of the fan base, right? Bad look sir.

Mark Hamill returned to Twitter to share a new version of the reunion photo, this time adding his Joker. He explained and defended his original post, but lightened the mood with some of his trademark dad humor in honor of Avengers: Endgame weekend:

Billy Dee Williams appreciated the Luke/Leia/Han/Lando reunion photo, and replied to Mark Hamill's tweet with his own light humor:

You should be used to getting everyones knickers in a twistpart of your charm man!

Most of Mark Hamill's replies have been supportive, with fans saying there was no need for him to have to defend himself. They understood he was just re-expressing his sadness at the "missed opportunities" of the final trilogy never having a full OG reunion. However, some commenters argued the source of what you retweet does matter -- especially if you are as influential as Mark Hamill -- since it may come across as support for the account that made it. Many other famous names, especially political figures, have been called out for such things in the past.

Mark Hamill wasn't trying to endorse anything other than more wishful thinking for What Could Have Been. He's been on that track for a while, even if the Disney suits would probably rather he drop it. What if this is all a long con and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker does give us some kind of Luke/Leia/Han reunion after all? Based on his many posts on the subject, it doesn't seem like that's the case, but you never know.

Mark Hamill even revealed he pitched an idea to director J.J. Abrams for Episode VII: The Force Awakens, bringing Luke Skywalker back into the story a little bit earlier in the film so he could reunite with Leia and they could all be there for Han Solo's goodbye. Now the character of Han is gone, and Carrie Fisher is gone in real life. Leia is still returning through previously unused footage, but the original trilogy reunion ship seems to have sailed.

At least we have Lando back in the mix for Episode IX, and the trailer showed him having a blast back in the pilot's seat. Of course, we can't forget Chewbacca -- even if this fan image didn't add him to the reunion. Chewie didn't get Leia's hug in The Force Awakens and he didn't get a place in this reunion photo. The Wookiee deserves better.
